Maths week 2016 kicked off nationally and internationally on October 15th. This event is a week that celebrates all things mathematically and encourages people young and old

to engage with Mathematics in a different way. Maths week in St. Pat’s 2016 was definitely the most successful to date. 144 first years took part in a Maths based quized that not only tested their mathematical knowledge but also that of mathematical facts. The whole school were encouraged to complete a puzzle sheet testing the student’s problem solving skills. We also look forward to plenty of art work as students in first and second year compete in a Maths themed poster competition. Those at senior cycle completed the Prism Challenge. This competition is run in conjunction with NUI Galway and again tests the problem solving abilities of students. Those who do well in the competition will be invited to attend Maths Olympiad classes in one of the Universities and thus try out for the Irish Maths Olympiad Team. Sean T. Murphy in TY was the top scoring student in this event. Well done all involved.

The winners of the first year Maths quiz were from St. Colm’s ; Cailum McNamara, Dean Millar,Martin McGibney , D’nis  Lance Santillan, Paul Surlis, Mark Sexton, Matthew Willis & William Mc Givney and from St. Cathal’s  Callum Kelly, Matt Hackett, Arnoldas Juska and Brady Maguire. Many thanks to Ms. Corcoran and her TY class for running a very exciting Maths quiz. Winners for first year poster competition are Cailum Mc Namara, Conor Mc Cauley, Mark Mc Dermott, D’nis Lance Santillan and Matthew Willis.

The exhibition goes on show at Cavan County Library from November 29th. All welcome to the launch at 7pm with a dramatisation of Rising Angels written,  produced and directed by Ms Mary Briody ((English Dept).

Congratulations to Ciaran O’Brien (1st Yr) from Ms McMahon’s English class. Ciaran  wrote a poem based on the theme “Family”. With the  All-Ireland replay on Saturday, this poem is very fitting.

‘My Family’ by Ciaran O’Brien.

In Cavan,

My family is small you see,

Mam, Dad and then there’s me.

My Mam’s from Mayo,

My Dad is a Dub,

With me on the side-line, like an eager-watching sub.

Next Saturday their counties will clash yet again,

To the victors, the spoils, the heroes of men.

Final whistle will blow,

One happy, One sad.

No matter what the outcome, it’s still mam and dad.

Congratulations to all our 2015/16 Junior Certificate students on their excellent results. Well done all.

German – Irish Exchange
german_group1_web german_teachers_web

St. Patrick’s College and Loreto College, Cavan played hosts to visiting Germans last week. Sixteen boys and girls from Europagymnasium in Woerth-am-Rhein (near Karlsruhe) spent a week living with families in the Cavan area and attending school with their exchange partners. Last October the Irish students spent a week living in Woerth with their German friends.

The German students were accompanied by Michael Thomas and Christina Beckert.

This is the first time the exchange between the three schools has taken place. It has proved to be a great success for all involved and will hopefully continue on a regular basis.

St. Eoins, a 3rd Year class from St. Patrick’s College, Cavan visited Dáil Éireann on Thursday 28th January as part of their CSPE project for their Junior Certificate. A class effort helped organise the trip with students organising various elements of the tour. Brendan Smith’s secretary, Celine along with Joe O’Reilly, TD organised our itinerary on the day.  Senator Diarmuid Wilson and Deputy Joe O’Reilly facilitated a question and answer session for us, with Deputies Smith and O’Reilly sponsoring refreshments. Student Council St Pat’s Cavan News

‘What a wonderful gift.’ As a fundraiser to finish off 2015, St. Pat’s Students Council organised a non-uniform/Christmas jumper day on Friday the 18th December. It was agreed this year’s funds raised would go to the Simon Community as a gift to those who would spend Christmas homeless. The whole school played a part and got behind the cause, this meant we were able to raise a grand total of €1001! Michele Ryan, Director of Services at Dundalk Simon Community, wrote back to the Student Council expressing how grateful they were, ‘The light of Christmas shines brightly on Dundalk Simon this year.’ With the vast majority of students and lots of teachers donating and getting in the Christmas spirit by wearing festive jumpers, the day will be remembered as one of the highlights of the year. Prizes were awarded for best Christmas jumper in each year: Daire Donoghue (1st Year), Evan Mc Intyre (2nd year), Evan Smyth (3rd year), Daniel Walsh (TY), John Grogan (5th year) and Jonathan Mc Philips (6th Year). November 2nd was the bicentenary of the famous Irish Mathematician George Boole. He was the first professor of Mathematics at University College Cork and the inventor of Boolean logic. George Boole is often referred to as the forefather of the Information age. Along with students in 45 other countries, students in Ms. Corcoran’s first year and TY Maths class participated in a module on Boolean logic to celebrate the bicentenary. Students learned about the truth tables, logic gates and how games like Candy Crush and Mindcraft use Boolean logic to work. This workshop awarded each student who participated a certificate to aknowledge their participation in a celebration of the legacy and incredible contribution George Boole made to the digital world we live in. Well done to all those who participated.
