St. Pats Law Team

The St. Patrick’s College law team participates each year in the prestigious Public Access to Law, National Mock Trials Competition which is held in the Criminal Courts of justice. Under the direction of their teacher Mr. Conor Mc Guigan, students acquire research, presentation and public speaking skills and also knowledge of the role of advocacy. The module also provides students with a significant platform to excel in areas of legal reporting, role play and court room artistry, aspects of legislation and the workings of the legal system. Following many months of preparation, Mr. Mc Guigan and the team are then invited to compete with teams from over 30 schools across Ireland to present themselves before real judges of the court where students assume the role of Barristers, Solicitors, Jurors Witnesses and Garda. The St. Patrick’s College Law Team also take part in a Law Day workshops as part of our preparations for the National Mock Trial Championships. This unique Legal workshop involves a Barrister or Senior Counsel visiting the school and providing an overview of the Irish legal system in the morning session and presiding over a Mock Trial in the afternoon. The TY Law module affords students with a unique insight regarding the workings of the Irish and European Legal systems. Students also attend regular court sittings in Dublin to witness the legal profession at its very best. The Law students gain an excellent insight into the entire Legal system, the Judiciary, its functions and many have pursued law as their future career!
