TY Careers Fair September 2023

On September 15th, our TY Careers event took place in the MacRory gym. Many thanks to all the local businesses who attended for their advice and guidance to our TY’s and 6th year students. Some of the fantastic local businesses who attended are listed below.

Music success for Anthony Boyko

6th year student Anthony Boyko had a busy summer playing 1st trumpet with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland who staged concerts in Waterford and Cork. The programme of music by Strauss and Rachmaninoff also featured performances by virtuoso soprano Ailish Tynan. Big congrats Anthony!

First Year ‘Open Day’ 2023

We welcomed over 220 6th class students & their teachers from 22 Primary Schools across the county on Thursday to get a real taste of what school days are like in St Patrick’s College Cavan. Thanks to our 5th & 6th year students who helped throughout the day. Hope you all enjoyed the experience & we look forward to seeing you again next year!! 

1st Year trip to Connaught GAA Air Dome in Mayo

Our 1st years had a brilliant day at the Connaught GAA Air Dome in Mayo on October 12th. 90 students participated in the 3 finals. Everyone received a medal & 2 students received awards for best defender (Jack McCrann from Drumlane GAA) and top scorer (Odhran O’Reilly from the Mullahoran Dreadnoughts). Well done lads and to Mr McNerney and Mr Duignan for organising!

Naughton Scholarship Award

Congratulations to our former head prefect Ahmed Cheema who received the Naughton Scholarship 2023. Pictured here proudly with his Naughton medal and our Deputy Principal Ms. Gwen Brady. Ahmed is currently studying Engineering in University College Dublin.

GAA Fundraiser Winner – ‘Predict the Score’

Our predict the score for the Senior County Final wasn’t won surprisingly! Well done to Eileen Monaghan who was picked from a draw out of our GAA fundraiser worth €250. All proceeds will go towards the preparation of our teams in Ulster schools competitions. Here is a picture of her nephew 6th year student and MacRory player Michael Monaghan and Mr. Macken with the draw card.

 

St Pat’s Handball Success

Well done to our Handball team who have qualified for the Ulster Handball ‘One Wall Finals’. Coached by Mr. James Brady. Great stuff lads!

TY German Exchange 2023

Our Transition year students had a great time on their German Exchange. They spent a week with their German partners near Karlsruhe & a great experience was enjoyed by all. 

Rannafast Qualify for Semi-final date with Dungannon

Congratulations to our Rannafast side who defeated a gallant St Paul’s Bessbrook team by four points on Friday 10th November last in Oliver Plunkett Park, Crossmaglen at the quarter final stage. They now proceed to face familiar foes St Pat’s Academy Dungannon. Great work lads & to team management of Mr Donohoe, Mr Murphy, Mr McEvoy & Mr Moran.

Green Schools ‘Bin It’ Workshop

St. Patrick’s Green schools committee hosted the ‘Bin It’ workshop on Monday December 4th last. Students learned about keeping their environment clean in a fun way. Well done everyone and to Ms Carolan for organising.

Anti-Bullying Week in St Pat’s

Monday December 4th saw Anti-Bullying Week begin in St Pat’s. Students from all year groups engaged in a variety of diverse and informative activities to promote Anti Bullying. Well done to everyone involved.

Knockout football secured by MacRory Squad

Our MacRory Cup squad earned their place in the knockout stages by virtue of a hard-fought draw with last year’s beaten finalists Holy Trinity Cookstown on Thursday night last 7th December at Roslea Shamrocks, Fermanagh. A spirited final quarter comeback whereby the team came from four down to level the game and in turn eliminate the Tyrone school from the competition. Pictured below is team captain Joe Dugdale, match referee Martin McNally and Cookstown captain Michael McElhatton. Well done to all involved and their management of Mr Somerville, Mr McKiernan & Mr Macken.

Festive Maths Relay

Our 1st and 2nd years enjoyed a festive Maths relay this morning; A combo of maths skill and physical activity. Well done to everyone involved. Thank you to Ms. Halton for organising the event. 

Annual Christmas Carol Service

A brilliant performance by our St Patrick’s College Choir for our Annual Carol Service on December 20th. Many thanks to Mr. Tackney and everyone involved in making it a fantastic display of singing and musical instruments.

 Wood Technology & Engineering Christmas Projects

Mr Macken’s 1st year Wood Technology & Mr Duignan’s 2nd year Engineering classes have been busy working on projects in the lead up to Christmas. Pictured below is some of their top quality craftsmaship! 

 

First Years SVP Christmas Hampers Collection

Some of our 1st year students were involved in collecting items for St Vincent de Paul Ireland Christmas Hampers with their teacher Ms. Flynn and Linda Byrne (SVP). All donations from teachers and students were greatly appreciated. Well done to all involved for such thoughtful gestures! Happy holidays to all students, staff and the greater St Pat’s community.

IAMTA Junior Problem Solving Success – January 16th

Well done to the TY and 3rd year students who showcased their problem solving skills at the IAMTA Junior Problem Solving Quiz today in Moyne Community School, Co Longford. Proud moment as our lads secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards.

Oisín McGrath squad get off to positive start in Derrylin

Well done to our Oisin McGrath team who got off to a good start against local rivals St Michael’s Enniskillen at Derrylin. Many thanks to SRS Fire Alert for sponsoring the tops that the panel are pictured in here pre-match. Keep it going lads & your management team of Mr Quinn & Mr McKeon.

Cavan Institute Song Writing Success – January 2024

Congratulations to the 12 students who took part in the Cavan Institute Song Competition, placing 2nd place in the Finals ! A great show of musicianship from all today. It was a brilliant performance. Well done to everyone involved! 

150th Anniversary Celebrations –  March 16th 2024 

UCD & Trinity College Dublin Entrance Scholars March 2024

Massive congratulations to our six UCD entrance scholars from the class of 2023 who received their awards recently. Also, big well done to Cormac Sheridan who received his at Trinity College, accompanied by Ms Fiona Brady Deputy Principal. All at St Pat’s are very proud of your achievements. Ad Meliora lads. 

1st Year Basketball – Regional Champions 2024

Congratulations to our 1st year basketball team who won the North East Minor A Regional Final against St. Pat’s Navan today. Brilliant win lads and to the management of Mr Rowley and Mr Malley. Top class lads – now for the All-Ireland’s in Limerick in May!

ATU Sligo – Engineering Talk 12th March

Many thanks to Theresa Dempsey from ATU Sligo who gave a talk to our 6th year Engineering students about the Work Based Learning Course on Engineering-Mechatronics Systems. Very informative & eye-opening for our students.

Bike Rack secured by Green Schools Commitee

We a please to announce we have received a 20 space rack and shelter and a 10 space toast rack for our school. Well done to everyone involved on our green school committee and to our teacher Ms. Carolan. Excellent work by all!

MacRory All-Star Trials

Well done to our MacRory players who took part in the All Star trials today at MUSA Cookstown in Tyrone. Darragh Noonan, Joshua Shehu, Philip Shannon and Ben Tully.

Cavan/Monaghan First Year Soccer Champions

Congratulations to our 1st year Soccer team who beat St Aidan’s Comprehensive Cootehill today 5-2 in the Cavan/Monaghan Final at the Peacelink in Clones. Brilliant stuff lads and to the management of Mr. Monaghan & Mr. O’Callaghan. Shay Hyland captained the victorious side.

Success at Wesley Music Festival & Feis Ceoil

Our musicians were successful once again in the Wesley College music festival and Feis Ceoil. Congrats to Anthony Boyko 1st place in trumpet competition & won the Walton Cup competition in the Feis Ceoil. Shane Galligan won the O15 percussion competition. Our orchestra came 2nd overall. Huge congrats lads and to Mr Tackney for all his hard work.

Mannok Talk – Computer Science

Big thanks to Caroline from Mannok for giving a presentation on summer placement for 5th year students studying Computer Science on Monday April 15th last. The lads have an opportunity to apply for a possible summer position where they will get hands on experience of what they have learned in Computer Science throughout the year. Thanks to Mr Darren McGuigan for organising an insightful talk for all.

TY Barcelona Trip 2024

On Tuesday 16th April, 38 of our Transition Year students landed in the Spanish province of Catalonia to take in the beautiful city of Barcelona. On day one, they visited the Nou Camp and enjoyed a highly informative walking tour of the city. Tomorrow they head for Portaventura in Salou! Vamos chicos. 

All-Star Success for Joshua Shehu

6th year student Joshua Shehu has achieved the highly notable feat of becoming only the 6th ever student to be chosen on the Ulster School’s ‘All Star’ selection as a result of his outstanding displays in the MacRory Cup. He becomes the first player from the Cavan Gaels club to receive this award and is the first St Pat’s man since Oisín Brady in 2020 to be selected. Joshua will accept his award at a ceremony in Belfast at the end of the month. Béir bua Joshua!

Future Star’ Success for Paddy Brides

There was further good news for GAA in the college this month with the news that 5th year student Paddy Brides was selected on the Queen’s University Belfast ‘Future Star’ team off the back off his excellent performances for the Rannfast Cup team this year. Paddy becomes the 4th winner of this accolade in the school’s history, following on from Gary O’Rourke & Cormac Timoney (2015) & most recently Gavin Brady (2016). A great achievement by Paddy & a proud day for his family and the Killygarry club. 

 

First Year Basketball Success in University of Limerick

Our 1st year basketball team beat @standrewsdublin in the Quarter Final and just came up short v @Castleislandcc1 on a 33-27 scoreline. They came away with 3rd place medals. Huge congratulations to the team and their coaches Mr Rowley and Mr Malley!

 

St Pat’s Cavan Muay Thai 2023/24

Attached below is a picture of the St Pat’s Muay Thai team from the 2023/24 school year. Great effort & improvements made by these lads this year under the watchful eye of Mr Niall Monahan. Great work all!
